“Pink chess gring gous”: discursive and orthographic resistance among Mexican-American rap fans on YouTube

This talk examines the writing practices of young bilingual Mexican-Americans on YouTube, focusing on the language they use to counter stereotypical narratives about Mexicans, Mexican-American history, and identity. The speaker will examine a YouTube video by the artist “Jae-P” who was born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents and comments posted by viewers. The discussion will examine how YouTube commenters signal their positions through language choice, as well as through discursive, and orthographic means. By embracing the marginalized status of Spanish, YouTubers connect themselves to the larger Mexican diaspora and to other Spanish-speaking communities. Flouting standard written norms, and transgressing language boundaries is a defiant act of identity for young bilingual Latino youth that signals a re-fashioning of their identities and language practices as hybrid and transnational.

- Cece Cutler: Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Graduate Center, CUNY - works on language and identity, particularly among young people in the U.S. who affiliate with hip-hop culture. Her current work explores multilingualism and alignment in computer mediated communication among Mexican-American youth. She is also working on a three-year collaborative NSF-funded project on variation and change in New York City English with Christina Tortora, Michael Newman, and Bill Haddican.
