The Tampa Bay Rays have made it official. They have named Asdrubal Cabrera as their starting shortstop. When the Rays signed Cabrera in January, it was unclear whether they would keep him at shortstop, or move him to second base.

As pointed out by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Cabrera showed his worth at shortstop this month, proving to be better than Nick Franklin and Tim Beckham.

Naming Cabrera the starting shortstop is only one check off the list. The Rays still need to decide who will man second base. The team could choose between Logan Forsythe or Nick Franklin. But, the Rays are expected to take their time on that decision.

Rays manager Kevin Cash has seen Cabrera perform for the past two seasons and says he’s performing better this season, than the last. That’s a good sign for the 29-year-old who has shown his range during spring training. Cabrera was a two-time All-Star shortstop during his time with the Indians.

Before it was confirmed, Cabrera was asked about the pending decision. Last week before the Rays played the Phillies, Cabrera said the decision was out of his hands. He just wants to show people that he can play shortstop.

Well, he will certainly get that chance. Cash is impressed by him and has been from the start, saying that Cabrera will play, no matter what. He will hit right in the middle of the lineup and the fact that he’s comfortable at shortstop, is just good enough to make it official.

It was reported last week that pitcher Alex Cobb would not be able to start on Opening Day due to tendinitis. We assume that Chris Archer will be the guy for the Rays. Archer tweeted some inspiring words over the weekend saying, “Don’t stress, do your best. It’ll work out how it’s supposed to.”
